This super-friendly spot was the top backpaker choice for years, and while the crowds have slowly drifted elsewhere, Tanavill Guest House remains as friendly as ever. Set in spacious grounds which can get a little swampy when the river is high, Tanavill Guest House has a bunch of basic bungalows and a couple of even more basic rafthouses. The hotel garden is a little unruly, but packed with thai herbs that have been thoughtfully labelled for curious guests. The rafthouse rooms have beds the floor draped in mosquito netting, and open onto nice decks - though note the view across the river here isn't impressive. This is a real budget option, and while the rooms are showing their age, and many do have a considerable critter population, they remain the cheapest by far on this stretch of the river. Relax and take it easy is the moto here. The restaurant does Thai and western food. The owner is incredibly friendly and you'ii always get a warm welcome.
